Mono Lake (Photo Gallery)

No matter how many times you have visited Mono Lake, it is worth another visit.

Located at Lee Vining in the Eastern Sierras’ Owens Valley, the lake sits at the beginning of the road up Tioga Pass and on into Yosemite beyond, to the west.

There’s no bad time to be at Mono Lake, although the lighting early or late in the day can be especially magical. If you don’t like bugs, avoid mid-to-late summer when the weird alkaline flies blanket the edges of the lake. If you are a science or biology geek, plan your trip for mid-to-late summer when the unique alkaline flies blanket the edges of the lake. In either case, they don’t bite.

We stopped by on our way up the valley during our inaugural trip in our Noovo and had the entire place to ourselves, with the exception of a pair of ospreys that nest upon the tufts.
